Have been on this OCLP journey trying to upgrade my MacBookPro 10.1 for the last 4 months. It's my main machine I have (16gb ram), and it worked fine with the only problem that I need to use the new Photoshop, and that requires at least Monterey, otherwise I would have been happy with what I had.
So my first attempt was Sonoma, after multiple rounds of reinstalling (I'd say about 8 reruns) I had something useable, but over the course of a month I noticed how there started to be an increasing lag when doing the simplest commands. I didn't even get to try to install Photoshop, my initial goal to begin with. Towards the end of the month I had green flashes on my screen, and the laptop would just crash after 10sec of turning it on.
Fast forward, thanks to great comments I got here in the past, I got the following suggestions: Maybe SSD (originally 500gb) was too full? Maybe try a lower OS? So I decided to do that. I upgraded my 500gb SSD to 1TB SSD, and went for Monterey.
I'm now on day 3 of my Monterey install, and encounter pretty much the same troubles from Sonoma. There's a noticeable lag, and after opening basic things like Safari, Chrome, the spinning wheel of death starts, or the mouse freezes without me having tried anything labor intensive. I still haven't even downloaded Photoshop...
Is this the time to maybe give up? I'm truly not sure what else I can do, I must have reinstalled the OS about 20 times over the past 4 months and must have spent 100+ hours on this. It might be fun if this were a spare machine, but it's my main one and my work has truly been suffering from this overall... if anyone has any thoughts to share I'd much appreciate it : )
