Fix for slower Startup and Shutdown on Mac
Image
I searched for a quite a while on forums to find the solution, but nobody seemed to know a solution. I finally figured out what it was. It seems that somehow the ownership of my startup volume's root directory (/) wasn't assigned to the root account anymore, but to my account instead. This made the kernel prelinking fail since it requires that root is the owner. This is how you solve this after launching the Terminal app: sudo chown root:admin / sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel sudo kextcache -system-caches You'll have to enter your password after the first command. Mac OSX: Lion vs. Snow Leopard [ Which Is Faster? ]
Image
Snow Leopard was designed with better performance in mind, but Lion was designed to offer new and compelling features. We wondered if Lion could still offer speed increases despite its extra conveniences, so we pitted the two operating systems against each other in seven tests. Which performed better? Here are our results, side by side and in video form. We performed everyday operations—rather than highly specific scientific tests—to get an idea of each operating system's general performance. All tests were performed with clear caches post-installation. Overall, and in general, Snow Leopard beat out Lion by a small margin. You can watch the tests side by side in the video above and view the results in the table below. There's more to these tests than just the numbers, however, as we believe they may point to hardly any difference in speed at all. The following tests were performed on a 2.66 GhZ iMac with 4GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive connected to the internet over Wi-Fi at a ...
Installing and Removing Fonts in Mac OS X Lion and Snow Leopard
Image
Managing fonts on the Mac is incredibly easy regardless of what system software version you are using. We’lll cover the process of installing new fonts, deleting unwanted ones, and also restoring your default system fonts in case you mess something up. Installing New Fonts in Mac OS X Installing new fonts is very easy. All you need to do is: Double-click on the font.ttf file Click on “Install Font” When you double click on a font file, other than being able to install it, you’ll also see a font character preview showing the font face. This window will also let you preview any stylized versions (bold, italic, etc) of the font that are available and tell you if it’s installed or not. This is done through the Font Book app, which can also be launched separately to manage your typefaces. Removing Fonts from Mac OS X Installed an ugly font and decide you don’t want it anymore? Back in Font Book we can easily uninstall them: Launch Font Book (located in /Applications/) and use the Search fun...
