🔧 Recommended Setup for Mid-2011 iMac with Radeon 6750M

1. Best macOS Version: macOS Monterey (12.x)

Why Monterey?

  • Last version with support for OCLP non-Metal GPU acceleration patches

  • Newer browser and app support (Safari, Chrome, Office 365, YouTube, etc.)

  • Stable with OCLP v0.6.4+

Avoid Ventura or Sequoia (13/14/15) on your iMac:

  • Your Radeon 6750M is non-Metal and not supported at all in Ventura+

  • No graphics acceleration → extremely laggy performance

Big Sur (11.x) is also a good fallback, slightly lighter than Monterey but with similar patching Success .

2. OpenCore Legacy Patcher Version: v0.6.4 (or latest supporting Monterey)

As of now:

  • Use OCLP v0.6.4 or v0.6.5 nightly

  • These versions support:

    • Non-Metal GPU root patches (critical for 6750M)

    • Better Wi-Fi & Bluetooth fixes

    • Post-install patches for frameworks like QuartzCore

📌 Important: Always apply Post-Install Root Patches after installing Monterey via OCLP.

Optimal macOS & OpenCore Setup for Mid-2011 iMac (Radeon 6750M)

Key Constraints:

  • Radeon HD 6750M GPU: Non-Metal (lacks Metal API support).

  • Wi-Fi Card: Broadcom BCM4331 (prone to issues in newer macOS).

  • Use Case: Basic tasks (Office, web browsing, YouTube).

Recommendations

1. Best macOS Version: Monterey (12.x)

Why Monterey?

  • GPU Acceleration: Monterey is the last macOS version with experimental non-Metal GPU acceleration via OCLP. Ventura+ drops support entirely.

  • App Compatibility: Supports modern apps (e.g., Office 365, updated Chrome) and security updates until late 2025.

  • Performance: Runs smoothly on your SSD/RAM. Avoid Ventura/Sonoma—no GPU acceleration = unusable lag.

Alternative:

  • Big Sur (11.x) if Monterey feels sluggish, but app support ends sooner.

2. OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP) Version: 1.4.1+

Why 1.4.1+?

  • Fixes Broadcom BCM4331 Wi-Fi issues in Monterey.

  • Includes stability patches for Radeon 6000M GPUs.

  • Avoid OCLP ≤0.6.8 (known Wi-Fi bugs on 2011 iMacs).

3. GPU Acceleration Status

  • Monterey/Big Sur: OCLP enables experimental acceleration via legacy drivers. Expect:

    • Smooth 2D tasks (Office, web browsing).

    • Limited 3D/video decoding (YouTube 1080p works; 4K may lag).

    • Occasional graphical glitches (transparent windows, minor artifacts).

  • No Metal = No GPU fixes: This is hardware-limited.

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Prerequisites

Step 1: Create OCLP USB Installer

  1. On current High Sierra:

    • Open OCLP → Create macOS Installer → Download Monterey.

    • Select USB drive → Build and Install OpenCore.

  2. Critical Settings:

    • SMBIOS: Set to iMac12,1 (your model).

    • Patches: Enable AMD Legacy GCN (for GPU) and Broadcom BCM4331 (for Wi-Fi).

Step 2: Install macOS Monterey

  1. Boot from USB:

    • Restart → Hold Option → Select EFI Boot (yellow drive icon).

  2. In OpenCore Picker:

    • Select Install macOS Monterey.

    • Format SSD as APFS (Disk Utility → Erase → APFS/GUID).

  3. Complete installation (≈30-45 mins).

Step 3: Post-Install Setup

  1. Install OpenCore to SSD:

    • Boot back into USB → Open OCLP → Build and Install OpenCore → Install to Internal Drive.

  2. Apply Root Patches:

    • Open OCLP → Post-Install Root PatchStart Root Patching → Reboot.

  3. Verify Fixes:

    • GPU: Check About This Mac → Graphics. Should show VRAM (e.g., "AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB").

    • Wi-Fi: Should auto-connect. If not:

      bash
      Copy
      Download
sudo kextcache -i / # Rebuild kernel cache

Step 4: Optimizations

  • Disable Transparency:
System Settings → Accessibility → Display → Reduce transparency (improves GPU stability).

  • YouTube Fix: Use Vinegar (replaces YouTube player with Safari-native).

  • OCLP Updates: Re-run root patches after macOS updates.

Troubleshooting

  • Wi-Fi Not Working?

    • Reset network: System Settings → Wi-Fi → Advanced → Remove all networks.

    • If still broken, use OCLP's Kext Patches → Force AirPortBrcm4360 patch.

  • Black Screen/Artifacts?

    • Add -radcodec boot-arg in OCLP (Settings → NVRAM → boot-args).

  • Performance Lag?

    • Use older Chrome alternatives (e.g., Thorium or Firefox).

Expected Experience

Web BrowsingSmooth (tabs may slow if >10)
Office AppsExcellent
YouTube 1080pPlayable (CPU-assisted)
4K VideoNot recommended
Multiple AppsAvoid heavy multitasking

Final Notes

  • Avoid upgrading to Ventura/Sonoma—no GPU acceleration!

  • Monterey + OCLP 1.4.1 is your best balance of stability and modern support.

  • If Wi-Fi/GPU issues persist, downgrade to Big Sur (OCLP 0.6.8) for maximum compatibility.

Best macOS & OpenCore Version for Mid-2011 iMac (Radeon 6750M)?

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a mid-2011 iMac 21.5” with 12GB RAM and a 250GB SSD. It’s currently running macOS High Sierra (10.13.6), but since many apps (like Chrome) are outdated and unsupported, I want to upgrade it using OpenCore Legacy Patcher.

The iMac is for an 11-year-old who will use it for basic school tasks, Office, YouTube, etc. My plan was to install macOS Monterey, but I’ve heard that some versions of OCLP have WiFi issues on this model. Also, the iMac has a Radeon 6750M GPU, which I believe is non-Metal, so I’m concerned about graphics acceleration problems.

I’d appreciate advice on: 1. Which macOS version is best for this iMac while keeping stability and performance in mind? Should I install Monterey, or is an older version like Big Sur a better choice? 2. Which version of OpenCore Legacy Patcher should I use to ensure WiFi works? 3. Are there any fixes for the Radeon 6750M GPU, or should I expect graphical issues?

A step-by-step guide or any reliable resource would be really helpful. Thanks in advance for your help!
