iOS 12 Beta 5 Hints at Upcoming Support for Dual-SIMs

References found in iOS 12 beta 5 hint at upcoming support for dual-SIMs, reports Guilherme Rambo for 9to5Mac.

A component of the system responsible for the generation of diagnostic reports includes new references to “second SIM status” and a “second SIM tray status”. Another component references a “dual sim device”. Those references are clearly an indication that iOS is being updated to run in a future device with support for two SIM cards, as seen in the screenshot below. The mention of a “second sim tray” indicates it would in fact have two physical SIM cards instead of a regular one and an e-SIM as the second.

Additionally, Rambo has found a pluralized string for "SIM card locked" in the new beta.

Huawei Surpasses Apple to Become World's Second Largest Smartphone Manufacturer [Chart]

Huawei has surpassed Apple to become the world's second largest smartphone manufacturer, reports IDC. According to their Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, 342 million smartphones were shipped in the second quarter of 2018, a 1.8% decline year over year.

The arrival of Huawei in the second position marks the first quarter since 2Q10 where Apple has not been the number one or two smartphone company in terms of market share. Huawei delivered shipments of 54.2 million units to move into the second position with a record high market share of 15.8%. Samsung maintained a comfortable lead, although indications from its recent 2Q18 earnings call suggest its mobile division revenues will face challenges moving forward.

"The continued growth of Huawei is impressive, to say the least, as is its ability to move into markets where, until recently, the brand was largely unknown," said Ryan Reith, program vice president with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers. "It is worth noting that Apple moved into the top position each of the last two holiday quarters following its product refresh, so it's likely we'll see continued movement among the top ranked companies in 2018 and beyond. For most markets, the ultra-high end ($700+) competition is largely some combination of Apple, Samsung, and Huawei, depending on the geography, and this is unlikely to change much in the short term. At the same time, Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo are all slowly pushing their customer base upstream at a price tier slightly lower than the top three. This is an area they should all watch closely as the builds in this segment are getting increasingly more advanced."

iOS 12 Beta 5 Confirms iPhone X Plus Resolution of 1242 x 2688?

iOS 12 beta 5 may have confirmed the resolution of Apple's upcoming 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus, reports iHelpBR.

After modifying the iOS Simulator in Xcode beta to force a resolution of 1242 x 2688 with a PPI of 458, the site was able to view applications in the enhanced landscape mode reserved for Apple's larger devices.

Apple released the fifth test version of iOS 12 for developers yesterday. To our surprise, when running the new build with the supposed resolution of the iPhone X Plus, it was possible to view the applications in landscape mode as they are displayed on the larger models. That is, taking better advantage of the space of the big screen. Until then, with the tests done on iOS 12 beta 4, this still was not possible. This indicates that Apple is even working on a larger iPhone with this resolution.

Logitech Acquires Blue Microphones for $117 Million

Logitech has acquired Blue Microphones for $117 million in cash. The company revealed the acquisition when announcing its financial results for the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2019.

Logitech agreed to acquire Blue Microphones, based in Southern California, for approximately $117 million in cash, assuming breakeven net working capital at close. Blue Microphones is a leader in studio-quality microphones for professionals and consumers. The Blue Microphones acquisition is a new adjacent opportunity for Logitech, consistent with the Company’s approach to M&A. The transaction, which is expected to close by the end of August 2018, should contribute approximately one point of sales growth in Fiscal Year 2019.

Blue Microphones makes numerous popular microphones used by podcasters including the Snowball, Yeti, Spark, Nessie, and others.
