Fixing MacBook Pro Stuck on Flashing Folder or Forbidden Sign After OCLP Update

Introduction:

Encountering a flashing folder or a forbidden sign (🚫) on your MacBook Pro after updating OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP) can be concerning. This guide aims to help you troubleshoot and resolve this issue without the need for a USB installer.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check OCLP Configuration:

    • Boot into Internet Recovery Mode by restarting your MacBook Pro and holding down Command + Option + R until the Apple logo appears.
    • Once in Recovery Mode, open Disk Utility and check if your SSD is still recognized and accessible. If not, there may be a problem with the disk or OCLP configuration.
  2. Repair Disk Permissions and Disk:

    • In Disk Utility, select your SSD and choose "First Aid" to repair disk permissions and verify/repair the disk itself.
    • If any errors are found and fixed, restart your MacBook Pro and check if the issue persists.
  3. Reset NVRAM and SMC:

    • Reset Non-Volatile Random-Access Memory (NVRAM) by restarting your MacBook Pro and immediately holding down Command + Option + P + R until you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) by shutting down your MacBook Pro, then pressing and holding the Shift + Control + Option keys on the left side of the keyboard, and while holding these keys, press and hold the power button for 10 seconds. Release all keys and the power button, then turn on your MacBook Pro.
  4. Boot into Safe Mode:

    • Restart your MacBook Pro and hold down the Shift key immediately after hearing the startup chime until you see the Apple logo.
    • Booting into Safe Mode may help identify and resolve any software conflicts or issues causing the flashing folder or forbidden sign.
  5. Reinstall macOS via Internet Recovery:

    • If none of the above steps resolve the issue, you may need to reinstall macOS via Internet Recovery Mode.
    • Boot into Internet Recovery Mode (Command + Option + R), then select "Reinstall macOS" from the utilities window and follow the on-screen instructions.
  6. Seek Professional Assistance:

    • If the issue persists after trying all the above steps, it's advisable to contact Apple Support or visit an authorized service provider for further assistance.

Conclusion:

By following the troubleshooting steps outlined in this guide, you can address the issue of your MacBook Pro being stuck on a flashing folder or forbidden sign after updating OCLP. If the problem persists, consider seeking professional assistance to diagnose and resolve any underlying hardware or software issues.

Stuck on flashing folder or 🚫 after OCLP update

Hi all, I have a MBP 9,2 which was running 12.7.1 fine. In the past I’ve updated OCLP and it’s root patches without any issue whatsoever but today it’s left me errors as described in the title.

If I press nothing I get a flashing folder with a question mark icon. If I hold shift and select the SSD (only option) then I get the 🚫.

Only other thing I can seem to do is boot into internet recovery.

Any ideas? I don’t have a USB installer to hand. When I installed OLCP originally it was just just straight onto the main drive.
