MacPro5,1 - OCLP Sonoma won’t even booth from USB

Troubleshooting MacPro5,1 Boot Issues with OCLP Sonoma

Target Audience: Intermediate to Expert users familiar with bootloaders and Mac hardware.

Solution:

1. Check Boot ROM Version: Ensure that the Boot ROM version is the latest for the MacPro5,1. An outdated Boot ROM may cause compatibility issues with newer versions of OCLP (OpenCore Legacy Patcher).

2. Reset NVRAM: Power on your Mac while holding down the `Command` + `Option` + `P` + `R` keys until you hear the startup chime twice. This will reset your NVRAM, which can resolve boot issues.

3. Revert to Known Good Configuration: If the issue started after updating OCLP, try reverting to a previous version of OCLP that worked.

4. Verify Graphics Card EFI: Since the system was flashed to recognize non-Mac GPUs, ensure the Radeon Pro WX5100’s EFI is compatible with your current setup.

5. NVMe & SSD Configuration: Check the NVMe card and SATA SSD connections and compatibility. Disconnect non-essential drives and try to boot only with the essential hardware.

6. Create Fresh Installer: If possible, create a new bootable installer for Sonoma on another Mac and attempt to boot from it.

7. Check Cable Connections: Loose or faulty cables can cause boot issues. Ensure all internal connections are secure.

8. Hardware Diagnostics: Run Apple Diagnostics by holding the `D` key during startup to check for hardware issues.

9. Consult Logs: If you can access the terminal or logs, review them for specific errors that can indicate the cause of the issue.

10. Safe Mode: Try booting into Safe Mode by holding the `Shift` key to see if the system can bypass the hangup.

11. Boot Option Visibility: If the boot options do not appear when holding `Option`, it suggests a fundamental issue with boot recognition or hardware detection.

If the issue persists, you may need to consult with a professional who can diagnose the hardware, or consider visiting an Apple Store or a professional with experience in Mac hardware and OCLP. Remember to back up your data before attempting major troubleshooting steps.
MacPro5,1 - OCLP Sonoma won’t even booth from USB

I have a MacPro5,1, which I’ve spec’d up to use for (I hope) Sonoma. It was able ONCE to install from USB, but once or an the update to OCLP 1.30 it would no longer even booth the installer.

It’s basically stuck at the attached screen during the initial effort of trying to boot.

It has a metal-capable graphics card (Radeon Pro WX5100), upgraded booth ROM, has an NVMe card, a regular HDD and a SATA SSD. Also it’s a MacPro 4,1 that was upflashed to 5,1 - and I flashed the boot ROM to recognize non-Mac video cards.

One other symptom I’ve noticed is that while holding down the OPTION key when powering up, it does NOT show the boot options screen. Screen remains grey.

Any ideas what is going on, or how to get past the stuck boot screen that I’ve attached?
