Can't get wifi working, "itlwm is not running", online instructions suck

I installed Catalina onto my HP X360 laptop with intel wifi. I used Nirech Catalina w/Clover, but no wifi as expected. Did some research, and stumbled upon several sites and videos talking about itlwm and airportitlwm. I followed along with several videos, by using Cloverconfigurator to mount the EFI partition, went to EFI>CLOVER>kexts>other and then I placed itlwm.kext into the folder per the guide. I then mounted Heliport, and dragged the heliport application into the applications folder, and then added it as a startup app under the users settings. In the videos, it works, and they get wifi. On mine, when Heliport loads it gives error message saying "itlwm is not running". Alternately, I've tried removing itlwm.kext and instead placing airportitlwm.kext into the same folder mentioned above. That appears to do nothing either.

The wonderful /s instructions online seem to indicate:

  1. Unzip.
  2. Copy the kext files into your Bootloader's kext folder in your EFI partition.
  3. Make necessary adjustments to your Bootloader's config.
  4. Reboot and enjoy!

Like the guide assumes I need help navigating to the proper folder to drop the kext file into, but I'll just fucking figure out "make necessary adjustments to your bootloader's config" on my own. Can someone with a halfway decent ability to explain stuff clearly help me figure out what I need to do to get one of these kexts to load in and get wifi working.

SOLUTION

It seems that you are experiencing issues with enabling Wi-Fi on your HP X360 laptop after installing macOS Catalina using Nirech Catalina w/Clover. The error message "itlwm is not running" indicates that the itlwm.kext or airportitlwm.kext driver is not properly loaded or functioning.

Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot the Wi-Fi issue:

1. Ensure proper placement of kext files: Confirm that you have placed the itlwm.kext or airportitlwm.kext files in the correct location. Double-check the EFI partition, specifically the EFI>CLOVER>kexts>other folder, to ensure that the kext files are present.

2. Verify correct permissions and ownership: Make sure that the kext files have the correct permissions and ownership. You can use the Terminal application to navigate to the kext files and run the command `sudo chown -R root:wheel kext_name.kext` to set the ownership correctly.

3. Update Clover configuration: Use Clover Configurator to verify that the kext files are correctly injected into the Clover bootloader configuration. Open the configuration file and ensure that the kext files are listed under the "Kernel and Kext Patches" section.

4. Check for conflicting kexts: Make sure that there are no conflicting or outdated kexts present in the kexts folder. Conflicting kexts can interfere with the proper functioning of the itlwm or airportitlwm drivers.

5. Restart and reset NVRAM: After making any changes to the kexts or Clover configuration, restart your laptop and reset the NVRAM. You can do this by pressing and holding the Command + Option + P + R keys immediately after pressing the power button. Hold the keys until you hear the startup chime sound for the second time, and then release them.

6. Seek community support: Reach out to the Hackintosh community for assistance. Online forums or communities dedicated to Hackintoshing or macOS on unsupported hardware may have specific guidance or experience with your laptop model.

Please note that enabling Wi-Fi on unsupported hardware using third-party drivers can be challenging, and success may vary depending on the specific laptop model and compatibility of the drivers. It's essential to backup your data and be prepared for potential issues or limitations when using Hackintosh setups.

Remember to use caution when following online instructions and verify the reliability and compatibility of the resources you're using.
