Hi all!

I have usual entry-level motherboard with Realtek ALC887, running OpenCore Big Sur hack with AppleALC kext and one of the suitable layouts. Probably fairly popular configuration, as this codec is employed in many budget motherboards.

Theoretically, it just works — all jacks are mapped and sound is coming out of them.

Realistically, it sounds uncomfortably bad, with audio dropouts, stutter and/or random noise occurring every couple of seconds.

Have you experienced the same? Well, today I was tinkering around and found a perfect solution! No need to buy an external DAC!

  1. Open built-in Audio MIDI Setup tool in macOS
  2. Set Format of your desired audio output to 16 bit/44.1 kHz instead of default 24 bit/44.1 kHz.
  3. That's it!

Now it sounds as good as it should be! I'm blasting my favourite tunes with wired headphones now and they sound great! Probably not in audiophile sense great, but decent enough to be used for most intents and purposes :)

Hope this works for you, too!
