How do you install VirtualSMC.kext on an unsupported macbook?

I have a MacBook pro from mid-2010 that no longer gets macOS updates. I read that having virtualSMC would allow them. I'm trying to ease myself into my first Hackintosh and thought this might be a good baby step. There are posts everywhere about installing Clover and Lilu and injecting the kext into the bootloader but I'm wondering if that is required on an original mac? Obviously, once I migrate to new hardware I will need them, but would copying the kext file, repairing permissions, and rebuilding the caches be enough for now?

Disclaimer: I know very little about kernel firmware and am only regurgitating what I've found online, so go easy on me :)
