I guess the question more broadly is how are GPUs supported in macOS? Are they tightly integrated in the OS or is it a modular solution like a kext where, perhaps with some modification, a new 'driver' can be ported to an older version of macOS? I'm assuming the lack of support for Nvidia in newer OS releases means there's some aspect of it that can't be ported easily, if at all.
I haven't seen anything that would make me want to upgrade to Big Sur anytime soon, and I'm hoping there's a snowballs chance in hell I won't have to upgrade to get a new AMD card. Don't break my heart.
