Very unusual Realtek 8168 problem #Networking

Hello,

I'm trying to solve what, as far as I can tell, is a relatively rare/unique issue. Been through half a dozen forums with no results.

This morning I had a functional 10.8.2 with working internet. I was having some packet loss and intermittent connection drop issues that I isolated to the OSX by testing my connection on my Windows partition and also my Win/Linux laptop. So I figured I might be able to address the issue by trying an alternative kext file for my hardware.

I first backed up everything (IONetworkingFamily and my Lnx2max kext). Replaced the necessary file with Slide's new R1000SL release. Repaired permissions, rebuilt cache and rebooted the computer. When I logged back in, I had no internet so I reversed the process back to my original files.

When I booted back in, I found out that I still have no internet with the original files that were actually working earlier today. The really weird part is that, under network settings, Ethernet looks "Connected" even when it isn't. I can unplug the cable from the computer and it still looks connected. Furthermore, it only has an IP Address (169.254.xxx.xxx) and a Subnet mask (255.255.0.0), but it does not display a Router IP, a DNS Server or a Search Domain. Basically, the damn thing THINKS that it's connected when it actually isn't.

I did everything I could think of short of reinstalling the OS. My data is backed up so it wouldn't be too bad to restore everything but I'd prefer to avoid this if possible. Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve this? If someone can point me in the right direction, it would be awesome. I can provide a Send me.zip if that'll be helpful to anybody.

Thanks!
