Tri-OS Success with Asus Prime Z790 and i9-12900K: Insights and Recommendations

GUIDE STEP BY STEP:

  1. Choosing Compatible Hardware:

    • A dedicated GPU (dGPU) is essential for Intel CPUs beyond the 10th generation due to integrated GPU (iGPU) compatibility issues with macOS.
    • Select NVMe drives that are known to have better compatibility with macOS.
  2. BIOS Configuration:

    • BIOS settings are critical, but you might not need extensive changes. Refer to the attached BIOS screenshots for guidance on necessary adjustments.
  3. Components Used:

    • ASUS PRIME Z790-V WIFI D5 ATX with BIOS version 1603.
    • Intel i9-12900K CPU.
    • MSI Radeon RX 580 ARMOR 4G OC for graphics.
    • Kioxia 256GB and KingSpec XG 7000 4TB NVMe M.2 SSDs for storage.
    • G.SKILL 32GB DDR5 RAM and Corsair 4000D ATX Mid Tower Case.
    • EVGA 600 B1 80+ BRONZE 600W power supply.
  4. Networking:

    • Realtek Wi-Fi and Bluetooth may not work out of the box and could require additional drivers or replacement with macOS compatible cards.
  5. Acknowledgments:

    • Thanks to the contributions and guidance from the Hackintosh community members like mihaiparaipan, CaseySJ, and the Tonymacx86 forums.

  • BIOS configuration screenshots that were crucial for getting the system to boot and run macOS efficiently.

By sharing your journey, including the BIOS settings and acknowledging the community members who helped you, you provide valuable guidance for others who might be embarking on a similar Hackintosh endeavor.

The dual NVMe setup is interesting, particularly pointing out that macOS has preferences for certain types of drives. The mention of Realtek Wi-Fi and Bluetooth not working is also a common issue in the Hackintosh community, often requiring either a kext (kernel extension) solution or hardware replacement.

Running: Sonoma/Monterey/Ubuntu/Windows 11

I finally got osx to run a Z790 built. I had many hurdles and some of which were just simple things such as:

*a dgpu is a must for Intel above 10th gen
*osx prefer 2 types of nvme drives over others.
*your bios settings might not need as many settings change as you think. (screenshots attached)
