Investigating the color banding issue

I first posted about the color banding issue common on 8th gen laptops here. Since then, people have contacted me asking if I ever found a solution, and my response has always been the same: After getting a panel replacement from Dell, which was a completely different model, the issue disappeared.

Unfortunately, disaster struck and a pixel on that panel just died. Dell replaced my display again, but I'm back to the original model and am facing the color banding issue once again.

I'm now looking harder for solutions to this problem. One thing has caught my attention:

If I take a screenshot of Launchpad where the banding is at its worst (by setting a five second delay on Screenshot.app), and reboot into Windows and view the screenshot, everything looks fine. If I then open the screenshot in Paint and save it as a 24-bit bitmap, it still looks fine, and no different to the original screenshot. If I then switch back to macOS, however, the colors in the 24-bit bitmap look totally different to the 32-bit screenshot!

This leads me to believe that macOS is not handling the color depth correctly, and is perhaps trying to display 30 bits of color on my 6-bit-per-pixel panel.

I have two discussion questions:

  1. Can anyone else with this problem replicate the screenshot situation described above?
  2. Given this new information, does anyone know how this could be fixed?
