Hackintoshing a very old laptop

I have an old 2003 MacBook kicking around, as well as a 2005 VAIO. Both computers are totally borked, beyond rescue with upgrades. However, these old cases are pretty thick and chunky — I'm thinking it might be an interesting project to stick new, smaller laptop components in them and make brand new computers. Preferably running MacOS, but I'd take Linux in a pinch. I know laptop cases are very tight and are designed specifically for the components intended for them, but with thicker cases and a 3D printer, surely something can be done with them?
