Does Apple actually care about environment?

This post is in reference to today's announced iMac. Apple claims it's environmentally friendly. Is that really the case, or are they actually putting profits over factors which can have a huge impact on the environment? We need to lay out some facts regarding actions being taken when designing new products, from a company claiming to be about the environment.

  • SSD's now cost as much as mechanical drives used to in the last user-serviceable MacBook Pro, Mechanical drive 2012 MBP
  • Apple starts with 256GB storage option. This is essentially useless for those who plan on backing up iPhone to their computer, or even importing a large 4K file to their computer.
  • In 2-3 years time, these computers will be useless to most households. Even $300 computers offer more storage.
  • Apple offers no NVME expansion slot. This could have ridiculously easily been added to the iMac, for next to nothing. I'm not talking about the default storage being removed, just an expansion.
  • Yes, external SSD's exist, however they can't be used for iPhone backups, and also defeat the purpose of an AIO.
  • 8GB is ridiculously low by any modern standards. Apple could have easily put in 16GB RAM, even if it meant slightly charging more. Something tells me the RAM upgrade will cost an additional $400.

I've owned a baseline MacBook Air before, and within 2 years, these issues started having a huge impact, especially with the OS updates requiring additional resources. The laptop was essentially useless for opening more than 3-4 safari tabs at a time by the 3 year mark.

  • Why does it make sense to make a desktop, which is designed to last 2-3 years, when they could just as easily make one which can last 6-8 years by charging $100 more? Yet, they have no issue charging $400 more for something which costs them about $35 more?
  • Is this environmentally responsible? People dumping old iMacs in a landfill somewhere? How about the frequency of recycling, doesn't the energy used to recycle cause an environmental impact?
  • Does Apple recycle old RAM chips, and reuse them? I never see the savings passed onto the consumers. I'd be good on buying a new laptop with recycled/refurbished RAM chips. Those things are meant to last forever, yet Apple charges the most for upgrades on those.
