I was debating between getting a Mid-2015 MacBook Pro 15" or a Dell XPS 15 9560 to hack. I would most likely be dual-booting the XPS 15, but will usually run macOS for most tasks.
I have a Hackintosh desktop so I am aware of the initial difficulties to get a hackintosh running smoothly, even more-so on a laptop, but I am totally fine with dealing with that and that the discrete graphics, SD Card Reader, and fingerprint sensor will not work while running macOS on the XPS and that I will have to swap out the network card to get WiFi and bluetooth working.
Some considerations:
-
7th Gen CPU w/ iGPU or 4th Gen CPU w/ dGPU
-
XPS with touchscreen functionality
The specs of the machines would be as follows (variations depend on availability of second hand market):
Mid-2015 Retina MacBook Pro 15"
CPU: i7-4870HQ-2.5GHz quad-core (Turbo Boost up to 3.7GHz) with 6MB shared L3 cache OR i7-4980HQ-2.8GHz quad-core (Turbo Boost up to 4.0GHz) with 6MB shared L3 cache GPU: Intel Iris Pro 5200 w/ 128MB eDRAM and AMD Radeon R9 M370X w/ 2GB GDDR5 RAM: 16GB 1600MHz DDR3L Storage: 512GB or 1TB
XPS 15 9560 CPU: i7-7700HQ-2.8GHz quad-core (Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz) with 6MB cache
GPU: Intel HD630 and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 with 4GB of GDDR5 (non-functional on macOS) RAM: 16GB/32GB 2400MHz Storage: 512GB or 1TB Screen: 15.6-inch 4K Ultra HD InfinityEdge touch display
If the prices of the machines were similar (price includes the WiFi Card), which machine would be a better buy/which machine would perform better?
Edit: formatting
