Troubleshooting Guide: AMD Hackintosh Restarts During Boot

Issue: AMD Hackintosh laptop restarts during boot but boots fine on the second or third attempt.

Solution Steps:

  1. Check Boot Flags:

    • Review the boot flags and parameters used during startup. Ensure that no conflicting or unnecessary flags are present. Experiment with different combinations of boot flags to see if the issue persists.
  2. Kernel Panic Analysis:

    • Analyze the panic logs generated during the failed boot attempts. Look for any error messages or warnings that may indicate the cause of the restarts. Pay attention to any recurring patterns or messages.
  3. Disable Verbose Mode:

    • Try disabling verbose mode during boot by removing the "-v" flag from the bootloader configuration. This may prevent excessive logging and potentially resolve the restart issue.
  4. Check System Logs:

    • Review system logs for any anomalies or errors occurring during the boot process. Look for any specific events or errors that coincide with the restarts. This can provide valuable insight into the underlying cause of the issue.
  5. Inspect Hardware Compatibility:

    • Verify the compatibility of hardware components, especially the CPU, GPU, and chipset, with the chosen macOS version. Incompatibilities or unsupported hardware may lead to instability during boot.
  6. Update Kernel Extensions (Kexts):

    • Ensure that all necessary kernel extensions (kexts) are up to date and compatible with the installed macOS version. Outdated or incompatible kexts can cause kernel panics and system instability during boot.
  7. BIOS/UEFI Settings:

    • Check the BIOS/UEFI settings of the laptop and ensure that they are optimized for macOS compatibility. Disable any unnecessary features or settings that may conflict with macOS boot process.
  8. Test Hardware Components:

    • Test individual hardware components such as RAM, storage drives, and peripherals for any issues or defects. Faulty hardware can lead to unpredictable behavior during boot.
  9. Seek Community Support:

    • Seek assistance from online forums and communities dedicated to AMD Hackintosh builds. Other users may have encountered similar issues and can provide valuable insights and solutions based on their experiences.
  10. Professional Assistance:

    • If the issue persists despite troubleshooting efforts, consider seeking assistance from a professional technician or service center experienced in AMD Hackintosh builds. They may be able to diagnose and resolve the underlying cause of the boot restarts.

Follow these solution steps systematically to diagnose and resolve the issue of AMD Hackintosh laptop restarting during boot. Identifying the root cause and addressing it effectively will ensure stable and reliable booting on your Hackintosh system.

AMD Hackintosh restarts during boot but boots fine on second or third attempt...

I finally got my AMD laptop running Ventura nice and fine (for me). The trackpad doesn't work yet, but I don't consider that essential since I use a mouse anyway.

It does have a weird issue though. When I boot it up, it will restart about 2 or 3 seconds into boot up and try again. It may do this another time but on the third attempt boots perfectly fine. The open core logs will show for each attempt but appear to be the same.

I found some attempts by others that said they fixed it by removing the verbose mode flag, but this didn't do anything for me. It seems that macOS is crashing itself perhaps. It's not super urgent since it boots and runs fine at least on the third attempt but has anyone else had any issues like this.

PS. I'm loving my poor man's MacBook Pro, though. Playing Geforce Now or Remote Play with my 'ole PS4 or just doing Mac stuff while at work.
