Successful iMac Pro Basher

I built this system a month ago using the Clover EFI bootloader system. After a bit of tweaking throughout the first week of use, I’ve got a 100% stable build using the following components with OS 10.14.4 :

My Key Components:

Motherboard - Gigabyte Z390 DESIGNARE

CPU - Intel i9 9900K

RAM - HyperX Predator HX436C17PB3K4/32 DDR4 32 GB Kit (4 x 8 GB) 3600 MHz DDR4 CL17 DIMM, Black

OS SSD - 2.5” 860 evo 500gb

MEDIA SSD - NVMe 970 evo 1tb

GPU - SAPPHIRE RADEON RX VEGA 56 PULSE 8GB

WiFi/BT - ABWB 802.11AC WI-FI With Bluetooth 4.0 PCI-Express (PCI-E) BCM943602CS Combo Card For Hackintosh (MAC OS X) Airport Computers, Supports Hands-off

Non Hackintosh-sensitive parts:

  • Fractal R6 Case
  • Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut paste
  • Be quiet Power 11 750w PSU
  • Be quiet Silent Loop 360mm AIO water cooler
  • Apple Magic Trackpad 2
  • Satechi Slim Wireless Keyboard (IMO - far better to use than apple’s equivalent)

This machine is extremely rapid and almost silent in normal everyday use . I’ve not even bothered to overclock the i9, as it’s total overkill already for my music production needs + I want it to remain silent. The Vega 56 is pretty much silent also, as it’s never pushed hard enough to raise its core temperature.

Typical CPU and GPU temps are between 25 - 50 degrees.

All internal and external I/O are working perfectly and I’ve got Thunderbolt 3 working great with my LaCie drive and Universal Audio Apollo Twin interface - although TB3 can’t be ejected and plugged in again without having to restart the machine, but this isn’t a problem for me, as I rarely need to unplug them.

In terms of synthetic benchmark tests, my Geekbench scores are :

Single Core : 6840 Multi Core : 39715

Comparing my above scores with an iMac Pro 14 core :

Single Core : 5192 Multi Core : 41344

My beast trounces the iMac Pro in single core performance and almost keeps up with it in multi core tests, despite having 6/12 cores less....

I previously had a 2018 MBP that cost nearly twice as much, which I was very disappointed with - but I’m so glad I got rid of that machine and am absolutely delighted with this new powerhouse. It’s literally the fastest computer I’ve ever used - not that I’m any sort of expert on the matter :D

Big thanks to Morgonaut and the Hackintosh community for all the help and guidance!! :)
