Vanilla vs Unibeast Install Comparison Research

tl;dr: This is long and pretty boring, there are no changes to the base operating system using unibeast. Make the community better by providing factual information.

To start I'm a huge fan of this community, not so much with the TonyMac forum. I've had posts deleted from TonyMac with no information from the moderators as to why. This is simply research, I am not trying sway opinion in any direction. I could absolutely care less how a user chooses to install any particular operating system to their computer.

One thing I don't like about this community is that I frequently see replies in which people say stuff like You don't know what is in TonyMac's install, thus you can't trust it. There is never any follow-up as to any proof to this kind of statement. I don't really like FUD, but I do like to do my own research.

I understand why people don't like TonyMac, I get it. Getting into computers in the 90's I've already had enough Microsoft and thus enough of the FUD. Community members should be providing new users with factual information as to why they should do a vanilla install.

This is a comparison of a Vanilla Mojave install using createinstallmedia and a base Unibeast install using UEFI and no additional video drivers.

I created two 32GB DMG containers and installed each version to each DMG. Then copied everything to my local file system.

Here are a list of the counts with the lists in pastebin.

Vanilla Mojave - https://pastebin.com/Q3eF8kLG

  • Files: 756
  • Paths: 354

EFI Partition:

  • Files: 0
  • Paths: 0

Unibeast Mojave - https://pastebin.com/UtdDgcte

  • Files: 790
  • Paths: 359

EFI Partition:

  • Files: 121
  • Paths: 66

I found kind of what I expected, you can view the differences here and draw your own conclusions: https://pastebin.com/NFVs8hf9

From here I was curious if anything in the vanilla install was modified. The FUD Factory would lead me to believe that a Unibeast install should be heavily modified probably with ways for Ol' Tony to steal my personal information. I created a list of all of the files in the vanilla install. Then I created an MD5 sum for each of those files from both the vanilla and unibeast installs.

Vanilla Files MD5 Sums: https://pastebin.com/B6rhMy34

Unibeast Files MD5 Sums: https://pastebin.com/LnQFbet7

Doing diff between those shows that there are no differences. I did not include MultiBeast, if there is significant interest. I don't have time today to add a third comparison.

If anyone would like additional information as to how the research was performed, please let me know. I included all of the file lists, so you can do your own research and/or check my work for errors.
