Garageband only Hackintosh (native or VM) ?

Have a reasonably powerful Desktop (i5-8400, 6-core with 8GB dual-channel DDR4 on a MSI H310M PRO-VDH mobo, SSD+HDD) which is currently running Ubuntu Linux. I'm using the on-board video based on the intel H310 chipset, and for audio I use either the on-board audio codec (Realtek ALC887 Codec) or an off-board USB2.0 audio-interface i.e. Behringer UM22.

I would like to have a Hackintosh, predominantly to run Garageband (yes - pretty much it). More than happy to buy MacOS but don't think I can afford a Macbook or iMac, so wondering if I could either:

  • Install MacOS native on the desktop PC, in multi-boot configuration (with Linux) ? I already have spare partition (UEFI) on my SDD and a spare partition on the HDD as well. However, a past experience (3yrs back) to do a similar setup on a Core2Duo setup ended with lot of frustration -- and really scared to try that again.
  • Install a Hypervisor (VMware Player, Virtualbox or KVM), and install MacOS as a VM. Worried however about the resulting performance and compatibility with off-board audio interface. Also, I have, so far not managed to find any instructions for similar setup inside Linux -- though I did find some for running MacOS VM as guest on Windows 7 host. (In fact this post give me hope, but seems to be more than 3yrs old and recent attempts don't seem to end well)

Suggestions, pointers to recent successes on similar hardware or configuration would be highly appreciated.
