Is my plan a sound one? (replacing a gforce gpu with RX470)

I currently have a 2 year old sierra install which I did under tonymac instructions (ooops, didn't know about this reddit at the time).

Hardware is GIGABYTE G1 Gaming GA-Z170MX-Gaming 5 LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard from their list and a 4790 paired with SSDs and a 2GB GTX750Ti.

I would like to get more GPU power for video with DavinciResolve and so will be replacing the gtx750ti with an 8GB ASUS RX470.

What I am planning to do:

  • disconnect all data drives (boot drive and data drives are separate SSDs)
  • replace the current boot drive with a brand new SSD
  • replace the card
  • turn the machine on and install vanilla Mojave using the instructions in this subreddit -- with the WhateverGreen and Lila kexts in place to improve native support
  • upon successful installation -- reconnect the data drives and live happily ever after
  • install software as necessary

If I need to abort or get stuck for more than a day (I use this machine daily)

  • place the old video card and old boot ssd back
  • reconnect data drives
  • run my old configuration and get back to work, slightly disappointed. Return the card.

I was also wondering if I should wait until Mojave 10.14.5 or (in light of the coreanimation bug) should I presume that minor version updates will be OK to make with a vanilla install?

Thoughts? Advice?
