Prohibited/Stop Sign on iMac10,1 (Late 2009) running Monterey

I'm trying to run macOS Monterey on an iMac10,1 (Late 2009) using OCLP. The mac used to have a 500GB WD HDD in there that i swapped out for a SanDisk Plus 128GB SSD.

Using OCLP 2.4.0 gives prohibited/stop symbol when booting USB Installer, using OCLP 2.3.2 seems to fix that issue.

For some reason the SSD will not show in disk utility or even in terminal using "diskutil list" unless the disk is wiped of any partition table(not just no partitions, it wants no table like gpt or mbr), then it will show up as uninitialized, and I can erase it to APFS and GPT partition table. The install in recovery is fine, ethernet works fine for internet, though I am using an offline installer. (btw this happens in natively supported OSes like High Sierra too)

After the first reboot it boots back into the partition named "macOS Installer" where it goes through the "about x min remaining" for the 29 minutes (even though it takes a lot more time) and then restarts, boots back into the SSD which is still named "macOS Installer" does a bunch of verbose stuff with a lot of "ramrod" but that seems to be normal.

Then it restarts finally into what should be the login/first setup (partition/internal SSD is named "Macintosh HD" instead of "macOS Installer") but it stops at the ethernet status for about 45 seconds and then suddenly one line more that says "still waiting for root device" with the prohibited sign and URL and the verbose but the verbose is all garbled and scrambled, but is still somewhat legible.

Googling seems to reveal not much help with OCLP, but much more with normal hackintoshing with opencore, which shows a SATA controller issue, because the "still waiting for root device" only happens when booting from a SATA internal drive. I've already tried AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext and CtlnaAHCIPort.kext, but same issue, I'd imagine SATA-unsupported.kext wouldn't help much either.

Could anyone help me fix this issue if it's been encountered before, I see alot of prohibitory/stop symbol posts on here but no "still waiting for root device"

Issues with Sequoia

Upgraded a Macbook Pro Retina 15" Mid 2015- A1398 DG from Monterey to Ventura then to Sequoia.

Went to watch Crunchyroll on Safari Browser today and Safari won't play Crunchyroll. Round circle of constant buffering.

Firefox will play the site but getting buffering with serious lag and some very small speaker interruption. It was working perfectly on MontereyOS yesterday.

Would anyone happen to know what might be causing the issues?

The upgrade from Ventura to Sequoia was done through the Software Update section of Macbook, not installing from external Usb drive.

Should I somehow roll back to Montere and then try all updates with USB drive?

Overview of recommended macOS for different devices?

Hey, is there an official recommandation on what macOS version is recommended for what device? I'm about to update an Macbook Air 6,2 with only 4GB memory. I want to update to Ventura at least, and what I've read so far Ventura and Sonoma should work okish. Sequoia seems to be recommended for 8GB memory devices only. Could someone help me with that decision :)?

Mac Pro 6,1 running 15.5 freezes, fan rpm skyrockets then shuts off.

I’ve been daily driving a Mac Pro 6,1 8-Core Dual D700 64Gb RAM 1TB with the latest macOS updates thanks to OCLP versions since 2020. Even though things have not necessarily been flawless, the machine has been reliable and mostly stable. I’ve taken a break off work since 2025 and have been noticing some serious issues lately but couldn’t say which update introduced them because of the lack of use on my part with Sequoia.

The Mac after some time of use will freeze (my trackpad stops clicking too) before the fan will progressively spin faster (probably goes from 800 to 1500rpm in about 20 seconds) then completely shuts off. It was running 15.5 and some previous 15.4.x updates also did that. Did I miss a setting when setting it up for it to cause this crash? Could this be the certain hibernation issue? I’ve since downgraded to Monterey (no OCLP) which feels super fast and smooth and presents no issue at all. However, now I’m missing some quality of life features introduced since and would consider updating it using OCLP again. I’ve researched different threads to see if this was a known issue but got no luck.

The most troublesome issues prior to this were the rendering issue in electron based apps such as Google Chrome which show red windows and slow down the computer by a lot. This can be worked around with the launcher. Installing updates seemed to remove the root patches which disables UI transparency and make the computer very slow. Typing the password at login may also be impossible if an animated emoji is used as a profile picture. And often the two external displays connected via Thunderbolt 2 using T3 to T2 adapters are taking too long to detect and turn on (usually have to unplug and re-plug at every startup for both monitor to work).

I’ve been considering getting a Silicon Mac which have now caught to speed with GPU performance (which will happen eventually). But continuing to use the MP6,1 is financially a much more desirable route for now which is why I downgraded.

Overall, does it appear as though the issues I’m experiencing are caused by a lack of setup on my part? Is the freeze followed by a hard shutdown a preventable known issue? Is there a specific version of macOS which will be more stable for the MP6,1?

Any input regarding these matters which be highly appreciated. Thank you.

Safari not working - MBP 2015, OCLP 2.4.0 and Sonoma 15.5

I’ve been fighting with my poor laptop a bunch trying to get it to all work properly and I recently reinstalled everything. However now Safari doesn’t work and goes that annoying thing where it won’t connect to most website and says “connection isn’t secure” etc. I’ve done all the standard troubleshooting like resetting NVRam, clearing cookies and site data, changing cross tracking settings, adding and deleting Google’s DNS number, forgetting and adding WiFi, everything.

Quick question: Is it possible to remove throttling (no battery) without formatting?

The battery of my really old MacBook Pro (Early-2015, A1502) was swelling, so I had to have it removed. However, it's way too slow. I'm on Mojave, and I have an original Apple charger.

Is it possible to disable the throttling using OpenCore without formatting or re-installing macOS—keeping all files and apps the same, and still using Mojave?

OCLP installation options, decisions decisions

First, thank you to the OCLP developers for all their hard work and dedication to keeping legacy Apple tech usable in tot he future. Especially, not only picking up where dosdude1 left off, but taking it further. !

Which is a great segue into my conundrum. I have a few older Mac portables kicking around, that I am thinking I should bring one more forward into the future with by updating the OS.

These Mac portables have had their Ram maxed out, and the CD/DVD drive swapped out to be able to instal an extra HD. Also they all have SSDs.

13” MacBook5,1(A1280) Intel Core Duo 2 Ghz 8GB Ram

SSD A 2 TB = OS X 10.14

SSD B 240GB = OS X 10.6.8 I am keeping this OS and apps (Adobe Creative Suite, Manga Studio etc) around because it is compatible with some of my older drawing tablet monitors, and the battery is still in good condition with only (174 cycle count)

13” MacBookpro 7,2 Intel Core Duo 2.4 Ghz 16 GB Ram

SSD A 2TB + OS X 10.14 This was the machine I was using for video Editing in FCPX, works well here. (Its THIS SSD that I am thinking might be a good candidate for use OCLP, but what do I know?)

SSD B 2TB = 10.6.8 Completely maxed out with all kinds of add ons etc, Once again as with the MacBook5,1 I am keeping this OS and apps (Adobe Creative Suite, Manga Studio etc) around because it is compatible with some of my older drawing tablet monitors, and the battery condition isn’t as good (877 cycle count)

13” MacBookPro9,2 Dual-Core Intel Core i5 2.5 GHz 16 Gb Ram

SSD A = 4TB Mac OS 10.15.7 I actually acquired this machine to be more current and make more videos with FCPX, but I don’t really have the time or interest to do so anymore. To make video presentations, that is.

SSD B = 2TB with various files and a partition of 35 GB, that acts a cleanup maintenance for Mac OS 10.15.7 (Its THIS SSD that I am also thinking might be a good candidate for use OCLP, but what do I know?) Cycle count of the battery isn’t so bad, at 207

What I’d like to pick the communities collective brains about is, which or (not necessarily) how, should I go about shoe-horning a more current Mac OS onto one of these two machines with OCLP?

Option 001 = 13” MacBookpro 7,2 Intel Core Duo 2.4 Ghz 16 GB Ram, SSD = 2TB, Current Mac OS X 10.14 Mojave

Option 002 = 13” MacBookPro9,2 Dual-Core Intel Core i5 2.5 GHz 16 Gb Ram, SSD = 4TB, Current Mac OS = 10.15.7 Catalina

ie, in your experience which OCLP Mac OS installation would work best with which?

I’m not really asking for how-to instructions here, because I managed to figure out/ research what dosdude1 had available to be able to get these machines to where they are today.

To conclude, if you’ve made it this far into the post, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

One more thing….. I’m also thinking about using OCLP on a yet-to-be-acquired 2015 MBP, 16 Gb Ram, etc, why? Because this model still has a wide variety of ports before they were removed on the 2016 redesigns

Help

Help

Newbie here. I’m running 15.5 Sequoia on my 2013 MacBook Pro. Opencore is 2.2.0. I download and install 2.4.0 and the patches. It tell me it’s done successfully. When I check terminal for the version after rebooting, I see REL-101-2024-08-05. Also, when I open the OCLP app again, it tells me I have 2.2.0 and it asks me if I want to upgrade to 2.4.0. I have done this probably 4 times now. I am stumped. Why is Opencore not updating after it tells me it successfully did update to 2.4.0?

Constant rebook Sequoia Macbook pro 2019

I can't access my macbook and I'm afraid I'll lose all the data I don't have a backup of. This is what happens to me after trying to update Sequoia. I have sequoia installed on an external SSD which is what I want to access. Press alt to choose the external drive and the reboot loop begins on the screen where you see the apple and the loading bar. I have tried patching the sequoia image and reinstalling but I don't have enough free space. I can't clear space because it won't let me copy or delete files from the external SSD. I don't understand why. Then opencore now tells me that the version does not correspond to the one installed and it installs it over and over again and doesn't let me click anything else. Where could I find the solution.

Screen not working on a Mid-2012 MBP

OPCL version 2.4.0

I updated my mac to whatever the latest macos sonoma is. After updating, the Macbook restarted into MacOS but there is no display. I don't even get a display in the foot picker and macos recovery. I also shined light through the apple cutout to check if it's an issue with the backlight but the display isn't even on. The Mac turns on and I was able boot to macos and everything seems to work but I can't test it on an external display because I don't have a mini-DP to HDMI adaptor

Mac pro trashcan dark screen

I created my bootable USB with sequoia from the terminal since it gave me trouble when creating it in the normal option, at the end of the download, download the patch and proceed to boot it with the USB, it appeared and I clicked on it but it only showed 🚫 and I started normally, I turned it off to try again and now it doesn't give me an image, I already tried in recovery mode and nothing even started with an option.

Has this happened to anyone else or how do I solve it? 😩

Support for Macmini6,2

I just picked up a late 2012 Mac mini (Came up as server?) machine and, have been trying to upgrade the OS. It has a core I7 / 256 GB SSD which seems to run pretty good, beside it having Mavericks. Tried to do a regular upgrade in the apple store, as people say it will let you install Catalina but, it doesn't show up. First tried to follow a video on installing OCLP but, it was saying I needed to install an OS I can't remember the name of, before it would work.

Then tried to use the 'macOS Catalina Patcher' but soon realized it says it's not compatible with my mac mini. Has anyone been able to get OCLP to work properly on Mavericks? The website says it's working with the Macmini6,2 but I can't figure out what to do. I tried the latest version of the program. Should I maybe try an older version of the OCLP installer? This is my first time trying this on an actual mac and it's very frustrating, and I can't figure it out. Don't want to give up on it, just don't know what else to do.

so how do you check for compatibility?

I don't want to upgrade if I have to update OCLP first.

Recommendation/Help for installing OpenCore on Macbook Pro mid-2012

Hey guys, I currently own a Macbook Pro mid-2012 13 inch model with the following specs:

- 2.5gHz dual-core Intel Core i5 with Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB
- 500 GB SSD SATA disk
- RAM: 16GB DDR3
- manufacturing date: mid 2015

I've been running it on macOS mojave and with the support from apple being finished, a lot of apps aren't compatible and I want to update to a newer operating system using OpenCore. From the limited research I've done, it seems like macOS monterey is the best option. All i'm looking for is to have a more updated operating system that I can forget about and not have to tweak little things to make it run smoothly and efficiently without lag. I've seen mixed reviews on macOS sonoma with some people saying it works like a charm and others saying its laggy and slow. For those of you that have used OpenCore on this particular model, which version of macOS would suit my needs best? I don't intend on being a heavy user and will only use this machine for web browsing, watching videos and netflix and also trading as a side hustle. Also if there's little things that NEED to be done in the installation process because issues have come up when y'all tried it and had to do trial and error to figure out what the issue is, please tell me too. The most frustrating thing is when there's one little step that NEEDS to be done but is easy to miss and can mess up the whole process.

The second concern I have after watching multiple videos on how to install OpenCore is that the main internal drive needs to be erased before downloading the OS onto it and rebooting not from the USB stick. Is there any way to avoid that and install it WITHOUT having to erase everything on my drive? I do intend on making a Time Machine backup first but I'm worried i won't be able to restore everything if I wipe the drive. I'm not too concerned about the files, but mainly the Notes app where i have notes from over 5 years ago and you can see the date on each note and its more of just sentimental value that i'd rather not lose all of that.

I'd appreciate any advice and recommendations with these two concerns of mine, either comment down below or send me a DM.

Hi, I hope you're better than me, hehe. I have this Mac and it's really giving me a headache. I've tried to install Monterey and I really haven't been able to. Upgraded to 15.5 from 15.4.1. successfully on 2012 Mac mini.

On a Mac mini with a 1 TB SSD and 16 GB of RAM:

I opened OCLP before doing the system update to 15.5. It took about an hour to do the complete install. After final reboot the background of my screen was white and I had to apply post install patches to get the wifi working again. No big deal. Works great so far on 15.5.

My keyboard is no longer working in login screen

The last thing I think I did is update to the latest version OCLP 2.4.0 and running root patch after that my laptop fell, and the ram had issues which I fixed. Now when I boot the macos as usual, the login screen can't recognize my keyboard both the Mac keyboard and external one. But the keyboard is working very well in the startup utility screen when I open the terminal.

So please how can I fix this issue I have tried NVRAM reset still no progress

Also I don't know why the input source at the top right keeps blinking every time I type on the keyboard.

Why do we have to use a USB drive/stick instead of a small partition on an existing drive?

I’m curious. Why do we have to use a USB drive/stick instead of a small partition on an existing (e.g. internal) drive?
I don’t think enabling firewire, XHCI or NVMe booting changes things? (Normally, I have a stick laying around, just not where I am now.)

Is there a technical reason or is it just a simplification in the GUI?

sequoia on late 2012 macbook pro retina i5 (h264ify & conductonaut liquid metal)

my m1 pro 14 screen died so I pulled out my 13 year old 2012 macbook pro i5 (macbookpro10,2) while I decide what to do with my broken 4 year old macbook.

With only 8gb ram and with a 250gb NVME SSD (with adapter) I had my doubts but I went ahead and used OCLP to install 15.4.2 (didn't want to go bleeding edge yet in case there were issues)

It is surprisingly still useable! I've been using it mostly for emails and youtube -- mostly browsing stuff. One big help was to install h264ify (or enhanced) plug-in. The CPU really burns with the newer codecs (vp9) and lags a lot with you are jumping around in a video. With the plug-in, it's as snappy as normal, you'll just be limited to 1080p which is adequate for me. I forgot how horrible the speakers were though!

Last night I used it for a 2 hour zoom call. every now and then the audio would flake out but I reniced the zoom process to the highest priority and then it started working smoothly. Just don't expect to do anything else alongside the zoom meeting.

It's still on the original battery which has been saying "service required" for the last three years but it lasted the whole 2 hour zoom call! (with 5 percent left! haha)

I also cleaned out the thermal goop what was getting dry and put on conductonaut liquid metal. I figure why not, if it dies it dies. just a tiny bit is sufficient, coating a thin layer on both the cpu and the copper heatsink. my temps before (I think it was artic silver 4) were around 75-85c while browsing and with liquid metal it was 65-75c which is pretty awesome.

TLDR - Sequoia on a 2012 8gb macbook pro retina runs great for general browsing and youtube. install h264ify to keep video playback snappy
