Help sought: I need to boot 3 times to succeed

Hopefully someone can help out here. I’m running a clover based system as a VM. ( I have several, and they work fine, apart from one Catalina which was working OK, but started an odd behavior somewhat out of the blue.)

I rarely need to boot my systems. As VMs, they run pretty much 24/7.

However, on this one particular install, when I boot it, it stalls before clover menu with a solid white unblinking underline cursor in the top left of a black screen. Nothing happens no matter how long I leave it. I reboot, same thing. I boot a 3rd time, clover loads and all is well.

I’ve googled this and tried a few suggested things like changing the clover wait time, changing some filesystem Kexts (forget exactly which), all without impact. I’ve also tried a few versions of clover, efis from known working backups or other working installations, all with no improved (or disimprovement) - just a requirement to boot exactly 3 times to get the OS to load.

I appreciate I’m in a VM here, but it’s largely similar to a bare metal install in that a clover disk image loads which in turn loads up the os.

It’s an annoyance and inconvenience rather than a real problem, but I’d be interested to know if it’s a known issue (with a known fix, hopefully).

All suggestions kindly appreciated as my google-fu seems to have let me down.
