Audio engineer contemplating upgrade to either a rackmounted Hackintosh or Mac Mini.

Hi all,

This is more of a theoretical question, so excuse the absence of a parts list. If the answer is Hackintosh, I'll probably end up basing my build on the CustoMac Mini Deluxe on tonymacx86.

I'm trying to build a rack-mounted rig in an SKB Studio Flyer 2U rack case. It's primary application would be as a portable electronic music performance rig, though I work as a post production audio engineer by profession, and composer as hobbyist, so I'd be running a trifecta of digital audio workstations (Ableton Live, Pro Tools, and Logic Pro respectively).

In the second unit of this rack I'd be running an audio interface of some sort— preferably thunderbolt for the minuscule-ly lower latency, but am open to other options if necessary (currently looking at the Focusrite Red 4Pre).

Before proceeding with the build, I'd like to inquire about the stability of a hackintosh in a performance environment, where I can't really have things fail or require assistance before working. The compatibility with an interface especially concerns me. I'd imagine things are fine after the initial set up, but I'd like to at least gather some opinions/experience on the idea first.

I'm planning on using a Supermicro CSE-503-200B as a chassis, because the rackable depth in the case is only 11 inches. This limits me to mini-ITX motherboards. Alternatively I could spend double the price and grab a mac mini/Sonnet Technologies RackMac Mini, and not have to worry about system stability, but the idea of buying another apple product makes me sick to my stomach.

Anyone have any input?
