Why build a hackintosh over just buying something like a 6 core Mac Mini?

I've been reading this page for a while now (under another user account). It is somehow interesting to me, and I've thought about creating a hackintosh myself. I don't really need another computer, but the challenge is appealing somehow.

My question is, why do people choose to build a desktop hackintosh, when a Mac Mini can be purchased with 8 gig of ram and six cores for just over $1,000.

Are hackintoshes cheaper to build? More powerful? Is it an anti-Apple thing? Is it the challenge overall?

I'm just interested why people choose this path over buying a stock Mac Mini.
