Nearly successful build; I almost gave up!

I had a 'help me' post all typed out, but I pushed through and have nearly set up my Mojave build!

I've had this machine for a few years, and up until yesterday morning, it was running El Cap perfectly happily. I wanted to try to get it to Mojave, so I went off and got myself a RX580, and started creating a Mojave installer. Things went south very quickly from there.

I have a GA-Z77X-UP5 TH motherboard, Intel 3.5GHz 3770K CPU, and a Sapphire Nitro RX580 GPU, and i'm using an imation 16gb USB2 stick for the install.

The two displays I have available to me are an old 23" Apple Cinema Display (DVI, but I also have a HDMI -> DVI adapter) and a 27" Apple Cinema Display (running through a DP -> mDP adapter).

I've tried this guide (linked on side bar), but the installer kernel panics before it leaves verbose mode.

I tried a couple of other tutorials, but nothing worked.

I used this guide, and it installed and booted! Basically, the change I made was just copy/pasting the config.plist options from the vanilla install guide, using a USB2 stick rather than a USB3 stick (although i'm not sure that was the issue), and using FakeSMC rather than VirtualSMC (again, not sure if that was the issue)

Whenever I try to use the iGPU on the 23" ACD, the initial BIOS loading screen comes up correctly, but when I get to the boot list or any BIOS options, the display gets a little glitchy. BIOS looks fine when using the RX580. Now that I have Mojave installed, it's all running off the iGPU perfectly fine. I'm going to try booting it from the rx580 to see what happens.

I haven't tried waking from sleep, iMessage, iCloud, Handoff or any of the more tricky options. I definitely intend on getting that to work.

I might keep posting in this thread to keep a bit of a diary going, as I know it definitely helped me in building this system
