Needing to retire my 2013 iMac and frustrated with the lack of current generation desktops from Apple (they hadn't announced the new iMac), I had pretty much decided to move my entire setup over to Windows... and I did just that. Curiosity however got the better of me while fighting through the Windows UX, and I decided to try a MacOS dual boot, really just to see how well it would run.

I now have both OS's dual booting nicely.

As it happens, I pretty much lucked out on my choice of hardware... especially as it was all chosen for Windows! The only two swap outs I had to make were the 970 Evo Plus SSD (used for another build I was working on), because it made MacOS hang even when it was only used for the Windows install, and the RTX2060 (still within the returns window).

Build

I used the guide from Hackintosher as the basis for this build, see https://hackintosher.com/builds/gigabyte-z390-aorus-ultra-i7-9700k-vega-64-hackintosh-build-guide/. Especially usefull was the config.plist, which I used as the basis for mine.

The model is set to Macmini8,1 (but the new iMac might now be a better fit), and I'm using the following Kexts and drivers64UEFI:

What worksOverall the system seems super-stable, with everything working except WiFi and onboard Bluetooth. I don't use WiFi, and my Logitech BT dongle works great so haven't tried hard to fix it. iGPU for encoding and preview works fine, as does iMessage and the app store. I also have SIP enabled.

The graphics card was golden. Literally plugged it in and everything was good, including all the ports (not tested the DVI to be fair, but the 2x DP and 2x HDMI are fine). Fans spin up at 50 deg. C, and are off under that.

The i9 9900k is a bit toasty with the 5Ghz OC on all cores. It idles at 30 dec. C, but peaks at 90 deg. C under full load on all cores. Performance is great, and GeekBench scores better under MacOS than Windows!

6,724 Single core, 39,397 multi core on GeekBench

Thanks everyone who has posted on this /s generally, and specifically for answering the questions I posted along the way!

Obligatory desk shot with blue RGB backlight so I can join the kool kids.
