[PSA] DisplayPort and Thunderbolt 2 are not the same!!!

I love this sub. Ya'll are dangerous.

I’m here to vent and hopefully help.

I lost a whole day yesterday trying to get my hack to recognize my UA Apollo interface via Alpine and/or Titan ridge (yes I’m trying both) cards. It wouldn’t show in windows or Mac.

Turns out that, the DisplayPorts on the card(s) do NOT recognize TB2 input (or at least not my interface). So I just happened to have a TB2 to TB3 adapter lying around. Used that and bam! Now working (hot swap still not working but whatev).

I just wanted to ask God why DP and TB2 port designs are identical…and who in the FUCK decided to do THAT?! Shouldn’t these cards be sold as "ThunderBolt + DisplayPort combo cards" since more than half of the ports on them don’t work as ThunderBolt!!!???

Feel free to enlighten me.

One last thing. I tried the Titan Ridge card first and the BIOS (F11 on Aorus Gaming 7) was missing the ThunderBolt settings option. After hours working with that issue I gave up and swapped in the Alpine Ridge card. Voila! Bios gained TB settings yay. I was curious so I swapped the Titan back in and to my surprise the TB settings were still there!

Hopefully this helps someone!

TL;DR - Get an adapter and plug your UA Apollo into the port with the bolt on it…even if the cable fits perfectly (without an adapter) in the one that says DP.
