How to get internet working with an external adapter?

Hello! So I recently got Mac OS Sierra 10.12.3 working on my laptop, but unfortunately, my Wi-Fi card is not supported. So I tried to use a USB wireless adapter that I had lying around, and I installed the drivers. Problem is, it still isn't working. However, in the Network Preferences, a 802.11 connection was created. I'm pretty sure that I just need to set it up, but I have no idea how to. Any help will be appreciated.
